DoubleTree by Hilton Milan (MXP)

The DoubleTree by Hilton in Milan scores points with friendly check-in service and a surprisingly good breakfast, but disappoints with its remote location far from the city center. Over an hour's travel time from Malpensa Airport and a lack of information at checkout about a public transport strike tarnish the overall impression. Those who can snag a discounted rate will find solid accommodation here – but for guests who value a central location, this hotel is not recommended.

After a review of the DoubleTree by Hilton at Milan Malpensa Airport (which you can find here), here is a review of the second DoubleTree in Milan.

Location and booking

As already mentioned, this hotel is located in Milan itself, Via Ludovico di Breme, 77, 20156 Milano. However, it should be noted that this hotel is anything but centrally located. The booking was made directly with the hotel due to an event where there was also a discount. From Milan Malpensa airport it is over an hour by public transport. You can find out how I liked it here in this review.

Check In

Very friendly and courteous, in addition to the obligatory cookie from DoubleTree, there was brief information about the hotel. Later I realized that as a Diamond you should also have a bathrobe and other things ready for the bathroom. For whatever reason, 10 minutes after checking into the room, someone was standing in front of the door who gave me a lot without me actually wanting it.

Room

As it is a DoubleTree, there was no upgrade (especially as there were no corresponding rooms). I had booked a Kind Bed Guestroom - and that’s exactly what I got.

When you enter the room, there is a bathroom on the left-hand side. There is a closet and safe on the right-hand side.

The bed takes up most of the room, with power sockets and reading lamps next to it.

A large table with TV almost completes the picture. There is also a fridge with two bottles of water. These are refilled every day.

A small armchair invites you to take a rest. There is also the option of making tea or coffee with a kettle.

Amenities

There’s actually not that much to report. There is a small gym in the basement with some equipment. Unfortunately, there is no extra water here, which I usually like at many other gyms in the hotel, normally you can fill up your water bottle there.

Then there is a really good breakfast which is offered downstairs in the restaurant. Contrary to the preconception that you usually only get a very rudimentary breakfast in Italy, I was pleasantly surprised here. However, there was one small drawback: the staff could hardly keep up with cleaning the seats.

There are plenty of seats (even outside in summer), but there are only two coffee machines which are not always sufficient. There is also juice but it was so artificial and sweet that it was a shame.

One day I wasn’t able to have breakfast, but I was offered a “breakfast box” which was good and sufficient to satisfy my hunger.

There is also a bar in the entrance area of the restaurant. At check-in, Gold or Diamond members receive a voucher for a free drink (soft drink, beer, wine or Prosecco)

Check Out

Quite quickly, the bill was correct BUT nobody knew about the bus and train strike. This is a bit annoying as it really messed up my schedule. So I’m leaving here with mixed feelings. The price was good thanks to the special rate, no question. But if you value a good location, this is certainly not the place for you.
