Holiday Inn Express Gloucester South

The Holiday Inn Express Gloucester South is located away from the city centre in an industrial area, which is its biggest drawback. The rooms are clean, the service is friendly, and the included breakfast makes a solid impression. If you're looking for a reliable hotel with good value for money, you'll find it here — as long as the out-of-the-way location isn't a dealbreaker.

3.8 / 5

If you ever find yourself in Gloucester and don’t want to stay in the city itself, here’s the review you need for the Holiday Inn Gloucester South.

Booking

In this case, the booking was made through the company, but also via IHG.com directly, which at least earned me a few small perks thanks to my status.

Location

This is probably the biggest downside — the hotel isn’t actually in the city. Depending on traffic, you’re looking at a good 10–15 minutes by Uber or taxi from the city centre.

Check-In

Very simple and quick — that’s probably the best way to describe it. It wasn’t busy at all, so I could check in straight away. I also received a voucher for a drink at the bar, along with an overview of what the hotel has to offer (which isn’t a great deal). There was even a mention that the pub next door is likely a better bet for food. A very friendly and helpful tip, because I wasn’t exactly in the mood for frozen pizza.

Room

The reason I chose the Holiday Inn was that I know what I’m getting: a clean room and a decent bed. Nothing more, nothing less — those were my expectations, and I wasn’t disappointed.

Aside from the bed, there was a small sofa and a decent chair that almost invited you to get some work done.

The bathroom wasn’t particularly large, but it was functional and well set up.

Breakfast

Breakfast was included in the price — though of course, that’s standard at every Holiday Inn Express. Still, it left a very good impression here, and staff were clearly making an effort to clear away dirty dishes as quickly as possible.

Verdict

The location is probably the biggest drawback. You’re not in the city — you’re quite far from it. Sure, as is often the case, there’s a pub nearby, and the food there was decent enough. That said, I do want to give credit where it’s due: the rooms were clean and staff proactively pointed me towards dining options. Beyond that, you’re simply in an industrial area without much going on around you. Would I come back? Yes — because the value for money was definitely there.
