A Short Crazy Flight

A spontaneous round-the-world trip that went off the rails due to a flight delay in London turned into an improvised adventure with stops in Copenhagen, Munich, and Delhi. The new Lufthansa A350 to Delhi and the A380 back to Frankfurt made the experience unforgettable despite all the change of plans.

I have a confession to make — this flight was originally planned as a round-the-world trip, but it didn’t quite work out that way. Still, it was absolutely brilliant.

Okay, the flight from Zurich to Sion and London was set in stone. But a good friend of mine had tried to turn it into a round-the-world trip — unfortunately, our plans were already derailed in London. Our scheduled flight to Canada was delayed and we were rebooked. That wasn’t good enough for us, so we flew to Copenhagen instead. From there we wanted to continue via Beijing, but there were only Economy seats available on that flight (normally not a problem, but when you’re flying around the world you do need some sleep), so we spent the night in Copenhagen. Back then the Hilton at the airport still existed and we were able to stay there.

For the onward journey, we sat down and thought about how to continue. Since the then-new A350 was flying out of Munich, we decided to fly there in the morning and then head on to Delhi to try out Lufthansa’s new product.

From Delhi we flew back to Frankfurt (to try out the A380), where we were able to shower in the morning before continuing via Geneva to Zurich. Yes, this trip would never have been possible without a great friend of mine at Swiss — but it was a truly wonderful (flight) experience that I would do again in a heartbeat.

Verdict

We planned a flight around the world (and planned it in great detail) but still made the best of it. A huge thank you goes to T.S., who made all of this possible and knows exactly how much I love these spontaneous and slightly crazy trips. Thank you.
