This is a hotel review of the W Bogota, where I stayed after the Sheraton Bogota.
Booking
As always, a big surprise — once again I booked directly via a cashback site. The prices were absolutely good for a W, and I was really looking forward to the hotel based on the many positive reviews. Besides, I personally really like the W brand; it’s a refreshing change from the standard hotels.
Check In
For a hotel of this category, this could have gone better. There wasn’t even another guest at check-in, but they made things incredibly complicated and took forever. To be perfectly honest, I would have expected more professional handling here. I was genuinely a bit annoyed today. When it came to the room, they first said there was no upgrade available, but after I pointed out several times that better rooms were being sold, suddenly a better room appeared after all. Please don’t get me wrong — I don’t want to pressure anyone, I’m just following the rules of the Bonvoy program. These discussions come up time and again, and since I hadn’t slept very long beforehand, I was simply a bit more annoyed than I would normally be about this game.
Room
First you have to switch elevators coming from the lobby, then you reach the room. They actually made quite an effort here and suddenly found a nice room. Go figure. I accepted it very gratefully in any case.
Bathroom
As always, there were Bliss products here, which I personally really like. There were also plenty of water bottles.
If you know W Hotels, you know that design is a HUGE factor in the overall experience. That was the case at this W as well. I really liked it — the hardware is great, but when it comes to the staff (check-in and check-out), well, that’s up for debate.
Bar
Okay, I have to give this a special mention. Why? It’s simply brilliant and well done. The staff practically dance along with the music, yet still keep an eye on the guests and take great pride in looking after their well-being.
Breakfast
This was truly outstanding. In addition to a large buffet, there was everything else you could order. After the second night, they already recognized you and the espresso etc. was brought without being asked. This is something I appreciate so much, especially when you also get the same (good) table right away when you show up.
I can’t say anything bad about the food quality. When I wanted a Colombian specialty without peppers (Peperoni in Swiss German; bell peppers), it turned out to be no problem at all. Quite the opposite — they seemed rather pleased to bring me something more typical of the country. Simply wow!
Concierge
Here you can book excursions and get plenty of information about Bogota. I booked a trip to the Salt Cathedral “Catedral de Sal” in Zipaquirá, which was really wonderful. Since it was a private tour, I had as much time as I wanted and already received a lot of additional information about Bogota and Colombia during the car ride there.
Recreation
In addition to a well-equipped fitness room, there’s also a great indoor pool. The pool isn’t particularly large (somehow reminds me of the pool at the Westin in Hamburg) — unfortunately a bit too small, but still very nice.
Check Out
I checked out at my requested time (with late check-out), but then something didn’t add up on the bill and it took ages to get it sorted. This is a shame when you later have to head to the airport with a (super friendly) Uber driver. It simply took an eternity at the hotel — I completely understand when mistakes happen, but not when it takes so long to fix the hotel’s own errors.
Verdict
The design is TOP, the bed comfortable, but here and there it does have some shortcomings that should be (quite easily) fixed. The location obviously isn’t ideal, and I knew that beforehand, but I would still gladly come back if they improve a few things.
