Hotel Review: Hilton Garden Inn Milan Malpensa

The stay at the Hilton Garden Inn Milan Malpensa was fair value for the price and met the expectations of a typical airport hotel. Service and rooms were solid, but the shuttle only runs hourly and the signage at the airport leaves something to be desired. For a longer stay in Milan, a hotel in the city centre is a better bet.

Booking

I booked through the Hilton Honors app, choosing the cheapest room — a King Guest Room. My reason for picking an airport hotel: an early onward flight the next morning.

Location

The hotel is about a fifteen-minute ride from Milan Malpensa airport, either by car or the hotel shuttle. Unfortunately the shuttle only runs hourly, and signage at the airport could use some work — or in some spots, exist at all. The shuttle serves both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.

Check-In

I arrived late in the evening and was the only guest at the front desk. The staff were friendly and helpful. I was assigned a standard room, which apparently reflects the fact that the hotel won’t be running under the Hilton brand much longer. There was a 25% discount on the restaurant and bar — and both were still open, so it was worth taking advantage of.

Room

The first impression of the room was quite good. The entryway is well lit by hotel standards. On the left is the bathroom with toilet and bath/shower combo. I was pleasantly surprised by how bright the bathroom was. The usual basic toiletries (shower gel and shampoo) were available as expected.

In the room itself, there’s a chair and a work/storage desk beside the bed — nothing fancy, but solid.

The TV with all the relevant channels is easily visible from both the bed and the sofa. As usual, there’s a safe, a coffee machine, and a small selection of snacks.

Fitness

In the basement there’s a reasonably well-equipped gym, accessible 24 hours a day.

Next to it is a laundry room available to guests, with an iron and ironing board.

Restaurant

The restaurant is open until 10 pm, the bar until 11 pm. Breakfast is served as a buffet — Gold and Diamond members eat for free. As you’d expect from a Garden Inn, the buffet is laid out with the usual fare.

Check-Out

Check-out was again straightforward and friendly. A shuttle was arranged and I was back at the airport in no time.

Verdict

The stay was fair value for the price. A typical airport hotel — if you’re actually visiting Milan, I’d look for a hotel in the city itself.
