Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel and Conference (Pre-COVID)

The Sheraton Amsterdam Airport impresses above all with its unbeatable location right next to the terminal — reachable on foot in just a few minutes, covered and convenient. If you're willing to pay a slight premium and can take advantage of Marriott promotions, you'll be well taken care of here. The author would happily return.

4.1 / 5

I chose the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport for a one-night stay. The reasons were an early morning departure, the hotel’s convenient proximity to the airport, and a current bonus points promotion. As always, I booked directly through Marriott (via a cashback site — I really need to finish writing that post one day…)

Location

As the name suggests, the Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel and Conference is just a few minutes’ walk from the arrivals hall. Simply follow the signs toward the trains, and a short distance beyond you’ll find an escalator leading up to the parking garages and hotels (Sheraton and Hilton). Everything is covered and reachable within minutes. The Sheraton is the first hotel you reach, while the Hilton requires a few extra minutes of walking.

Check-In

There used to be a separate check-in for Platinum members and above, but it was unstaffed — and since things were quiet, I headed straight to the main reception. Or so I thought. The staff member was very friendly, but also new to the role. That’s not a criticism at all, but things did take quite a while and he seemed uncertain, with no one willing or able to help him. That’s actually the main thing I’d flag: when someone is new to a job or position, it naturally takes longer, and I have full understanding and patience for that — but when he had a question and his colleagues were (probably) chatting among themselves and didn’t step in to help, that was a bit disappointing.

Once everything was sorted, he apologized once more and gave me the key information about the hotel (breakfast times, restaurant, lounge). I already knew all of it from previous stays, but I found it a very nice gesture nonetheless.

Room

Once again I was lucky and received an upgrade to what they call an Executive Suite. As always, I had booked the cheapest available room. A small note: this room category automatically includes lounge access, regardless of your status.

When you enter the room, there’s a short hallway — the bathroom and sleeping area are to the right, while the left side features a work desk, some seating, and a table.

When I stepped into the room, a small welcome gift awaited me: a bottle of red wine (the same one served in the lounge), stroopwafels, complimentary water (still and sparkling), and a card. Always a lovely surprise and a gesture I genuinely appreciate.

The bedroom has a large, comfortable bed with a generous pillow selection, a cozy armchair, and a wardrobe containing a safe, slippers, hairdryer, ironing board, and more.

The bathroom is a good size and features not just a shower but also a bathtub, plus bathrobes. Shampoo and toiletries are well stocked, and there’s also a razor and toothbrush. Cleanliness was impeccable, though the room does show some signs of wear and tear here and there.

The living area has a sofa, a table with four chairs, a TV, a minibar (empty), and a lounge chair. As an aviation geek, being able to look out the windows toward the airport makes everything feel a bit special. The power outlets are a little behind the times — the work area has all the standard sockets, but elsewhere you’ll need to unplug a lamp to get access to power.

Lounge

Lounge access is granted either through your booked room category (or an upgrade you’ve received) or through your Marriott status (Platinum and above).

Your room key grants access throughout the day. In the morning, a light breakfast is set up; during the day there are soft drinks and small snacks; in the evening these are supplemented with alcoholic beverages and more substantial snacks including salads. It’s also worth noting that the lounge is only consistently staffed during the evening happy hour — outside of that, getting something printed, for example, is more of a lottery. That said, I have to say the staff I’ve encountered have always been genuinely motivated and as helpful as possible.

Breakfast

Once again it was quite busy, making it nearly impossible to take photos without people in them. The selection is excellent both in quality and quantity. Eggs Benedict are of course prepared fresh to order. Nobody goes away hungry here.

Check-Out

Check-out today was handled entirely digitally through the Marriott app. I dropped the key cards in the box and was on my way back to the terminal.

Verdict

The convenience and proximity to the terminal are a massive plus for the Sheraton. You do pay a premium for it, and prices don’t differ dramatically from the Hilton at the airport. But if you value being that close and can catch a good Marriott loyalty promotion, you won’t be disappointed. I’ll definitely be coming back to the Sheraton.
